The Importance of Early Intervention…Pete’s Story

Jill Braun at workPete’s mom, Tereasa Burns, was four and a half months pregnant when she found out she was going to have a child with Down syndrome. Their initial sadness quickly turned to joy as they remembered that they were still blessed with a beautiful baby. After some self-education about Down syndrome, a mentor from Mile High Down Syndrome contacted them and shared the many resources that would be available, especially in Jefferson County. These included Jeffco First Steps a Part C service and DDRC Early Intervention Services. Staff visited them in the hospital and explained the process needed to receive services in Jefferson County. Even before they left the hospital a physical therapist showed them how to start “exercising” Pete’s arms and legs. He had low muscle tone and needed the therapy. Tereasa felt reassured having the guidance so soon. The Guidance continued from their service coordinator and therapists to establish a plan of goals and frequency of visits. This was their Individual Family Service Plan (IFSP), which could have felt overwhelming to create, but the professional’s assistance was provided in a very understanding way. The family always felt important in creating the plan which was always updated appropriately when it was time for review. Tereasa states that she was very grateful for the team’s input and ideas.

Tereasa looked forward to therapy visits so that she could share Pete’s progress and receive new ideas. Tereasa felt that her DDRC staff was knowledgeable and helpful in coming up with different activities to challenge Pete to reach his next developmental step. With this help Pete was prepared to begin preschool this year. DDRC’s Early Intervention staff and the R-1 Preschool staff helped make the transition from early intervention to preschool a smooth one. Pete is now walking up the stairs to preschool, on his own, and enjoys his time at school in Conifer. Pete’s Mom, Dad and his dogs miss him as he goes off to school, but know he is growing and developing his skills that will help him succeed in life.

Jill Braun at workTereasa misses Pete’s in home therapy sessions but still hears from their DDRC therapists and is free to call them if she has any questions. Tereasa is thankful for all the support she and her family received during what could have been a difficult time. When Pete gets home from school he loves playing with his dogs, Shadow and Terra and his cat Kobu. We wish Pete and his family the very best life has to offer.
